What Is Oxidisation and How Do Antioxidants Help?

You’d have to be living under a rock to never hear of antioxidants. It’s all the rage in health shops up and down the country.
To some, it may seem like a fad. However, antioxidants are an extremely important component of a healthy diet. Here, we’re going to explain what oxidisation is, and how antioxidants help to reduce the effects of oxidisation.

What Is Oxidisation?

What Are Antioxidants?

When we have too much oxidisation in the human body, we release ‘free-radicals’. These atoms are missing an electron. They then shoot around the human body looking for to ‘steal’ and electron (clearly, it’s much more complex than this, and you need to have some idea of stable and unstable atoms, but simply put, this is what happens). As the free radicals move throughout the body, they’re damaging cells by ‘stealing’ parts of the healthy cells atoms.

To combat this, we need to ingest antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralise the free radicals by giving them the missing electron. This stabilises the reaction and consequently reduces the damage on the body.

There are many antioxidants and we consume them all the time, especially if we eat specific fruit and vegetables.
