There are whole armies of bacteria in our
gut fighting for our well-being and in doing so strengthening our immune
system.
Bacteria are one of Nature’s wonders and
until the invention of powerful enough microscopes nobody knew of their
existence. The funny thing is that we are born most probably with none at all
and yet within a few years we carry a combined weight in excess of two kilos of
the microscopic critters.
They start to invade as we leave the womb
and continue to do so until the day we die and possibly beyond.
Science has yet to fully understand the
many hundreds of different strains and their exact properties and purpose but
many we do know about. Some of the good ones have been cultivated and can be
taken as a supplement such as Biocare Acidophilus.
This is a culture of one of the most common
bacteria included in most probiotics and is also known by its full name of Lactobacillus acidophilus. This
particular bacterium helps to break down food in the intestines that in turn
creates lactic acid and surprisingly, hydrogen peroxide.
This is an unfriendly environment that a
number of bad bacteria cannot survive. This is just one tiny example of how
bacteria finely tunes the workings of our gut and it makes you wonder at the
foolishness of rushing to use antibiotics in all but the most severe of medical
conditions.
This is because antibiotics do not
discriminate between different types of good or bad bacteria and just destroy
the lot.
One of the recurring tales from people that
consistently take a daily probiotic is their report of disappearing
gastrointestinal infections. They may
have been suffering all sorts of problems but by sticking to a regular intake
of a probiotic like this one the benefit is soon obvious.
In parts of the Caucasus and eastern Mediterranean
countries the regular intake of Kefir has exactly the same results and this drink
has been used for a thousand years or more.
Keep a healthy gut environment and there
are many clear advantages.
